Top Five Tips for Writing Super Video Supers

When used appropriately, video supers can be a highly effective device to impart key information to viewers. Here are my top five tips for writing super video supers.

Script all supers
Supers should be scripted in the same way as the dialogue or visuals; and signed off during the scripting stage.

Use sparingly
Supers should complement the visuals or the audio; don’t over do them or they lose their effectiveness.

Keep it tight
Refine the text to the absolute minimum. For example, could the heading on this point be any tighter without losing the meaning?

Use plain English
Never use jargon in supers – use simple plain English to advance the message.

Consider the visuals
Time the supers to appear against appropriate visuals.
